The unsung heroes during the electoral processes

Denhang Bosai

Election is one of the biggest exercises in Indian Democracy in which the entire country is involved in one way or the other. The ECI, the Election Observers, contesting candidates and their supporters, the leaders of all political parties pitch in their services to make the entire electoral processes successful. But the real unsung heroes are the ordinary government employees who work round the clock on a war footing to ensure that the electoral process is free, fair and peaceful. During the election the government employees come directly under the control of the ECI. These poor government employees are even barred from applying any kinds of leave except on exceptionally unavoidable grounds. However, the real bulk of the responsibilities are carried out by the Nodal Officers appointed during the elections by the ECI. They take care of the EVM, Transport, Manpower management, Polling Personnel Welfare Management, Flying Squads, Magistrates, Micro-Observers, Reception and Counting Management etc.  These job are not easy by any standard as they have to go strictly by the rules. Moreover, the punishment for erring in their assigned duties is very severe and may even invite suspension. They have to strenuously work under the watchful eyes of the Election Observers directly appointed by the ECI.

However, I personally feel that the real unsung heroes are the data compilers as all documents are prepared digitally these days, master trainers, polling personnel who conduct the polls and of course, security personnel who are on duty day and night.  In some places in Arunachal Pradesh, some polling personnel have to travel on elephant backs, mules, boats, helicopters, on foot and so on and so forth. However, Tirap and Longding districts have good arteries of roads that facilitate the polling personnel to reach their respective polling booths easily and without any fuss. Of course, there are some few polling booths where the polling personnel have to reach on foot crossing hills and valleys. Some of them face untold sufferings but take the sufferings in their strides. Imagine an Indian election without the willing contributions of these unsung heroes who are not less than the soldiers fighting on the borders. They are ready to sacrifice their lives to make the elections a success. They work impartially and their poll duty is decided by randomization. No government employees including the Grade-IV staff are spared without being assigned some duties or the other. If our elected leaders realized the great effort that goes with any elections, the better and worked honestly and sincerely for the people. Eventually, it’s the elected leaders who reap and harvest the fruits of the hardwok put in by these unsung heroes.

This is the beauty of Indian elections. Even the USA and other developed countries watch our elections with amazement and wonderment. Our elections are so successful mainly because of the contributions of the unsung heroes who get nothing in return. So, I salute these unsung heroes who make the huge exercise of electioneering possible thereby helping in installing governments to run the country and the states. Tuki kick-starts poll campaign at Boleng

ITANAGAR, Mar 29: With only about a week left for the polling day, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki kick started hectic campaigning for the Congress from Boleng in East Siang district yesterday with a massive rally. The State goes to polls for the two Lok Sabha seats and the 60-member Legislative Assembly on April 9.

Addressing a huge crowd at Boleng, Tuki sought support for Tapang Taloh, former Industries Minister and Congress nominee from 35-Pangin (ST) Assembly Constituency. He hailed Taloh for the rapid development in the constituency and assured that the pace would continue once he is re-elected to the Assembly.

“Congress is coming back to power, there is no doubt over it. Therefore, the best way to partner in the developmental process will be to be with the Party and vote in favour of the Congress nominee,” Tuki said.

The Chief Minister today addressed an election rally at Mariyang in support of JK Panggeng, the Congress nominee from 40-Mariyang-Geku (ST) Assembly constituency. Panggeng was Parliamentary Secretary for IT, Law, Legislative & Judiciary, etc in the erstwhile Legislative Assembly.

In both the rallies – at Boleng and Mariyang – the Chief Minister sought support for sitting Lok Sabha MP and Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering. He said Arunachal Pradesh was lucky to have one of its MPs as a Union Minister and therefore it was the duty of the people to re-elect him so that he continues as a Union Minister and facilitate developmental packages for the state.

“Over-all development of the state in the last five years is evidence enough to prove the sincerity and commitment of the Indian National Congress. Now it is time for the people to recognize the Party’s contribution and vote it back to power,” he appealed.

Releasing the INC Election Manifesto, Tuki pointed that each and every commitment made in it will be fulfilled as the Party did for the 2009 Manifesto in the last five years.

He also expressed gratitude to the people for reposing faith on the Congress Party which has been exemplified by the fact that 11 Congress nominees have been elected even before a single vote has been caste.

“Eleven of our nominees have been declared elected unopposed. This proves that people do not have faith or confidence on any of the opposition parties in the poll fray,” Tuki observed.

He further added that only Congress, which is the strongest organizational political party with deep roots in the country, can give a stable government, which is an utmost prerequisite for progress, peace and prosperity, according to an APCC release.

Parl. elections: Campaign in East Siang yet to gain momentum

Correspondent

RUKSIN, Mar 29: Although there are only 11 days left until the election, campaigning in East Siang district by all the three contestants from the Arunachal East parliamentary constituency is yet to gain momentum.

The Eastern Parliamentary Constituency will witness a triangular contest between former Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering (INC), former BJP MP Tapir Gao and People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) nominee Wangman Lowangcha.

Congress candidate Ering is trying to reach out to as many remote villages as possible. He is trying to woo voters through Congress’ development mantras.

BJP veteran Tapir Gao is taking up ‘corruption’ and ‘misrule’ by Congress-led UPA government as main planks of his campaign.

It will be unwise to under-estimate the prospect of the PPA candidate who has a strong political base in Upper-Arunachal districts.

The Arunachal East Parliamentary constituency comprises 27 assembly constituencies while the Arunachal West constituency comprises 33 assembly constituencies.

It is observed that villagers of remote and interiors areas of the district have shown little interest on Lok Sabha polls. Many of the villagers do not even know the names of the contesting MPs. They seem to have more interest on assembly election.
